Feed In Tariffs

The UK government are under increasing pressure to meet green targets and that is the driving force behind the Feed In Tariff scheme (FITs).

The Feed in Tariff scheme pays you to generate electricity via solar pv panels. For every unit of electricity generated you receive a payment from your electricity supplier. This payment is for generating the solar electricity only - regardless of whether you use the electricity or sell it back to the grid.

You will also save money on your electricity bills by using the free electricity you generate, and if you do not use all of the solar electricity, you can sell it back to the grid and make further income from the export (it is always more cost effective to use as much solar electricity as possible!).

There follows an interview with Kevin McCloud from Grand Designs speaking about his reaction to the FIT's at Eco Build 2010...

Even though you generate your own electricity via solar pv panels, you will still remain connected to the grid so that you can 'import' electricity if your system does not cover all of your needs at a particular time (and at night!). Likewise at times when your  system produces more electricity than needed, you will export it back to the grid. The following diagram illustrates this...

Solar PV - FIT Tariffs

This electricity generation is recorded by a meter which will tell you how much power you have generated. The readings from this meter will determine your FIT payments..
